From the moment I got home last night I couldn’t stop thinking about Harper, all night and day just the thought of her deprived me of sleep, food and any coherent conversation at all, every little thing she did last night kept replaying through my head. Caleb eventually got sick of my moping around after about 2 hours and left to go to the gym and warned me that if I didn’t have this pussy shit sorted out by the time he got home he’d beat me out of it, then he’d steal Harper from me. His word’s exactly.
“Not like it would be hard.” He taunted as he walked out the door with his gym bag.
And I guess all of those reasons and plenty more is why I was here; standing out the front of her door. I was still working on what I was going to say or how I would convince her to listen to me at all let alone let me inside. I don’t think I’ve been this nervous in my life about anything, that’s most likely the reason why I hadn’t worked up the courage to knock yet. Standing there I can clearly hear loud music playing through the door. I smile to myself after recognizing the tune.
Funky town – Lipps Inc.
Could anything else make me like this girl more? I’m still lost in the music when I feel a light tap on my shoulder, and my reflexes just take over before I have time to stop them. My hand shoots out over my shoulder removing the hand but keeping it in my tight grip. From behind me I hear a little squeal and quickly turn coming face to face with Lilly.
“Oh my gosh!” She gasps out and just as quickly as I seized her hand I let it go.
“Holy shit Lilly. I’m sorry, you took me by surprise. I didn’t hurt you did I know?” I hurry on looking her over checking for anything along the lines of red marks or bruises.
“No, no. It’s fine seriously I think it was more shock than anything. I mean it was stupid I should have thought before sneaking up on a marine.”
Her words run dread through my veins. If she knew did Harper know? She must see the look of horror on my face because she quickly hurries to explain.
“Noal told me. But don’t worry I haven’t told Harper.” I inwardly thank the heavens “But...” She continues bringing me right back down again “That doesn’t mean I don’t think you should.” Lilly points out as if it was as plain as day. “If you’re here because you want something more with her than trust me she needs to know, she needs all of the details before she can head forward. She was dealt pretty shitty teenage years so she has a hard time trusting people.”
I listen carefully to everything, hanging onto Lilly’s every word because this is probably the most I’ve ever heard about Harper and her life.
